Mr.Yan left the direction to Miss Maggie Ong to pull off Syuen Hotel. Miss Maggie is the manager of this hotel and she used all her expertness, web and accomplishments to convey up the criterion of the hotel. Other big metropoliss include LuangHYPERLINK hypertext transfer protocol: //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luang_Prabang HYPERLINK hypertext transfer protocol: //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luang_Prabang Prabang, Savannakhet, and Pakse. The official linguistic communication is Lao. Laos is a multi-ethnic state with the politically and culturally dominant Lao people doing up about 60 per centum of the population, largely in the Lowlandss. Assorted Mon-Khmer groups, the Hmong, and other autochthonal hill folks, accounting for 40 per centum of the population, live in the foothills and mountains. Laos scheme for development is based on bring forthing electricity from its rivers and selling the power to its neighbors , viz. Thailand, China, and Vietnam. Laos is practically a low cost state as is non that civilized and developed comparison to other states in this epoch. Their state development is manner far behind so compare to other states. Laos is the lone landlocked state in Southeast Asia, and its thickly forested landscape consists largely of rugged mountains. The highest of which is PhouHYPERLINK hypertext transfer protocol: //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phou_Bia HYPERLINK hypertext transfer protocol: //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phou_Bia Bia at 2,818 metres ( 9,245A foot ) , with some fields and tableland. Local tradition holds that there are three seasons ( rainy, cold and hot ) as the latter two months of the climatologically defined dry season are perceptibly hotter than the earlier four months. Laos has a really good quality dirt that really helps on agribusiness activities. Subsistence agribusiness still accounts for half of the GDP and provides 80 % of employment. Merely 4.01 % of the state is cultivable land, and a mere 0.34 % used as lasting harvest land. The lowest per centum in the Greater Mekong Sub part and rice dominates agribusiness, with approximately 80 % of the cultivable land c ountry used for turning rice. Subsistence agribusiness is self-sufficiency agriculture in which the husbandmans focus on turning adequate nutrient to feed themselves and their households. The typical subsistence farm has a scope of harvests and animate beings needed by the household to feed and dress themselves during the twelvemonth. The labour cost at Laos is really inexpensive as most of the people do nt mind making any difficult occupation to gain money and survive at that place. After detecting all the pros and cons of Laos, Mr.Yan decided to put at Laos and use his hotel line concern and use the advantages in Laos. Mr Yan practically used all the expertness and recourses that he have from Malaysia and import to Laos to develop the concern in Laos. He focused on chiefly on hotel line concern and so he invested besides invested on tea, herbs, bird nest and wood trade furniture. Syuen Corporation established another corporation name called Dansavanh hotel group stand foring Syuen Corporation in Malaysia. In 1997 the Malayan Syuen Corporation started to develop Laos s largest resort on more than 18000 hectar of national park land on island in the reservoir behind the Nam Ngum dam.One of the company s first act is to put up a proverb factory to treat the lumber logged from the development country ( Dhirendra K. , 2001 ) . Then they build the first hotel called the Nam Ngum Resort and so followed by the Vientiane Hotel. Syuen Corporation signed master understandi ng with the Laos s authorities on 6 January 2006 and unfastened Nam Ngum Resort which is the first eco touristry resort. These hotels improved the touristry of Laos as it attracted people from other states which finally increased the currency exchange. Besides that, Syuen Corporation opened tea fabricating company and lumber fabrication company over the old ages. The thought is to fabricate good quality tea and wood trade furniture with low labour cost and export to states like Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam with good monetary value. This helped the company to gain good net income as they export choice stuff with a better monetary value so other rivals. Analysis Addition Grow chance It may sound general, but it is undeniable as this is one of the chief grounds for company to put to another state. The Syuen Corporation proprietor senses the chances presented in the state, therefore moved early to come in the market. Back in 1997, the company already started to develop the largest resort in Laos ( Dhirendra K. , 2001 ) . Fast forward to today, the return are stupefying, the corporation now own a resort with golf nine and casino, a 4-star hotel and two more hotels in building ( Dansavanh Hotel, n.d. ) . The rise in figure of tourer in Laos in recent old ages has boosted the touristry industry in the state, particularly hospitality industry. The hotel line concern in Laos benefited greatly from the growing of touristry as the hotels are aiming upscale travelers, which are 12 % from 1000000s of traveler to Laos. Furthermore, the hotel besides offer touristry bundle at their hotel as add-on to their growth gross and capitalise on the touristry tendency in Laos, where the authorities announced 2012 to be Visit Laos Year. Apart from that, the corporation hotel in Malaysia besides provide touristry bundle that finish are traveling to Laos which include adjustment in their ain hotel. The move to put in another state gained the company diverseness in their concern and besides growing in term of figure market served. Low labour cost Laos remain as one of the state that the labour cost are comparatively low. Syuen Corporation ventured into the state and enjoys low cost in term of rewards, and allows them to hold higher net income border. The low cost status non merely benefited the hotel concern line, but besides the Corporation s tea plantation and wood trade furniture concern. despite the low cost of labour in the state, Syuen Corporation still face small competition as the menace of new entryway are really low, as Laos ranked 163 overall in Ease of Doing Business rank out of 185 economic systems ( The World Bank, 2012 ) . The company addition benefit of the first mover advantage as they are one of the most early company to put up sawmill and furniture fabrication in the state. They besides remain as few of the company from Malaysia to bask the low cost advantages. Synergy from diverse concern The low labour cost besides encouraged the company to venture into different industries, other than their chief hotel line concern, as mentioned in the debut portion of this assignment. Most of their concern in other industries synergized good with their chief concern. For an blink of an eye, the Corporation engagements in tea plantation and wood trade furniture industry in the state besides contribute to their hotel concerns. High quality tea are produced to be used in the hotel and besides export, this cut down the cost of acquiring tea therefore increases the net income border of the Corporation. Similarly, the most of the furniture in the hotel are wood trade furniture of their ain. This in bend saves the cost of puting up hotels in Laos, and the tea and furniture gain free exposure and advertisement to tourist. Furthermore, the tea and furniture are besides exported to Malaysia, and the Corporation hotel can acquire in a low monetary value compared to the market monetary value. The synergism created is good to their concerns. Shortcoming Lao Government Forest Policy Harmonizing to J A ; C Expat Service, if want to get down a concern in Laos can be really ambitious because Laos is considered one of the most hard states in the universe in get downing a concern ( J A ; C, 2012 ) . Therefore, Syuen Corporation is confronting few defects when come ining Laos to spread out their concern. First and first, the geographical location of Laos is covered by many mountains, fields and tableland. There are over 70 % of Laos consists of rain forests ( Globalaware.org ) . Therefore, deforestation is the major impact on Laos which besides indirectly affect Syuen Corporation concern at Laos particularly the lumber and sawmill concern. Syuen Corporation set up sawmills to treat the lumber logged from the development country ( World Rainforest Movement and Forest Monitor 1998, 53 ) . The environmental jobs that encountered by Laos particularly deforestation is acquiring more serious as spread outing commercial development of the forest and programs for extra hydr oelectric installations. Therefore, in order to continue valuable hardwoods for commercial extraction and to protect the forest environment, Lao authorities decided to put quota logging. Besides, the determination of puting the sum of quotas is complex and no transparence. Initially, the state will subject a figure to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry ( MAF ) . The figures will be go throughing through many ministries and the determination is made without any audience with functionaries from the Division of Inventory and Planning in the Department of Forestry ( Vajpeyi, 2001 ; Southavilay and Castren 1999 ) . Then, MAF will portion the quota between the states and most of the states will acquire quota far below the lumber processing capacity in that state ( Vajpeyi, 2001 ) . Consequently, Syuen Corporation s sawmills concern will be affected the most due to the quota logging set by the Lao authorities. Infrastructure low Laos is an developing state, the hapless entree, short of substructure and many undeveloped finish are curtailing the growing of the hotel and touristry industry in the metropolis. There are merely 5 air hoses serve the Wattay International Airport, from regional metropoliss such as Bangkok, Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur and Phnom Penh. ( Horwathhtl.com, 2011 ) Therefore, to entree to the metropolis of Laos is really limited. Therefore, the incommodiousness of entree ability in Laos will impact the cordial reception concern of Syuen Corporation. Furthermore, Laos is confronting the obstructions of set uping Internet connectivity due to the deficiency of accomplishments and resources. The Internet connectivity in Laos is a slow procedure which indicated by the low degrees of Personal computer incursion and hapless telecommunications web ( Thongvilu and Houphanh, 1996 ) . Although major towns are connected in Laos, puting a call between towns is frequently hard. Such incommodiousness and deficie ncy of substructure might impact the public presentation of Syuen Corporation concern in Laos particularly hotel concern of Syuen. As the Internet connectivity service is low, the managerial section of Syuen Corporation at Laos will be affected and diminish the efficiency of the employees. In add-on, clients might hold bad experience with the WiFi service provided by the Syuen Corporation hotels in Laos. Education degree and wellness service low The instruction degree at Laos is non every bit high as other developed states, the standard quality of the post-secondary school non high so they lack of professionalism and skill labour. This will impact employees public presentation of Syuen Corporation. Besides, the medical services at Laos really limited and low criterion, doing the happening of morbidity is high and this will led to the reluctant of tourers come to Lao. Harmonizing to Prof. Dr. Somboune Phomtavong, Prof. Dr. Kongsap Akkhavong and Dr. Somchanh Xaisida ( 2005 ) the deficiency of clean H2O, hapless sanitation, unequal nutrition and limited entree wellness services are worsening factors, which influence morbidity, peculiarly in rural countries. Furthermore, low quality local wise mans, pedagogues and trainers in public wellness direction plans. Furthermore, the geting scientific discipline and engineering accomplishments are restricted due to the low degree of the basic instruction and foreign linguistic communica tion cognition. Other than that, Lao Government requires that a company may hold up to 10 % of its employees as aliens if those aliens are unskilled, or up to 20 % if they are skilled. In all instances, they must acquire blessing from authorities in their employment. The company must obtain permission from authorities in order to increase the per centum of foreign workers it employs ( Jclao.com, 2012 ) . Recommendations Send for preparation and implement preparation plans One of the defects that operating concern in Laos is the instruction degree of this state is low. Most of the Laos people are non adept and knowing. They are lack of cognition to manage the extremely skill undertakings. So Syuen Corporation can direct the unskilled workers and workers who lack of experience to the Syuen Corporation hotel in Laos ( Vientiane Hotel and Nam Ngum Resort ) in order to larn how to execute all the undertakings. For illustration, larn how to clean the invitee suites, how to pass on decently with invitees, how to cover with the reserve and 1 on 1 concern phone calls. After the Laos workers learnt how to execute the undertakings, they can better their public presentation. Besides that, the company besides can supply some preparation plans for those unskilled Laos workers. One of the illustrations can be English Language preparation plan. The Syuen Corporation can offer English linguistic communication developing plan to do certain that all the workers can unde rstand and talking the English linguistic communication fluently. This plan is of import for the workers because most of the hotel income addition is from the foreign tourers. So it is of import for the workers to understand and talk English linguistic communication fluently due to English linguistic communication is the International Language. After their English accomplishments improved, their public presentation besides can be improved. The workers can improved in ability to react to inquiries or petitions and offer aid in English or ability to take part in 1-on-1 concern phone calls in English. Once the employees public presentation was improved, the client satisfaction will follow to better. And it will impact the company repute and net incomes. Finally it can keep and beef up the company competitory advantages. There has a successful instance that an organisation can better its public presentation by implemented the English linguistic communication developing plan. The organisation is Hilton International Incorporate. With a mostly English-speaking client base that demands the highest degree of quality and service, Hilton needed a planetary scheme for constructing the concern English communicating accomplishments of its employees to assist present on its trade name promise. After careful rating, Hilton implemented the GlobalEnglish Corporate Learning Servicea„? ( presently known as GlobalEnglish Edgea„? ) on a world-wide footing and has realized important productiveness and public presentation betterments ( GlobalEnglish, 2011 ) . Furthermore, there besides a successful instance that the company sends the employee for preparation can better the employee public presentation. SCA Company let the worker to go to a 2 hebdomad preparation plan at one of SCA s European offices in Goth enburg, Sweden. The plan was filled up with meetings and installation Tourss with squads from merchandise classs, R A ; D, sourcing and provider development. The employee said that she was able to rapidly larn about SCA s concerns, merchandises and markets around the universe, and aline itself with the planetary platforms and patterns within a short clip ( Vivian B. , 2009 ) . Joint venture with Airline Company By holding a hotel in an developing state with short of resources and substructure, it makes tourers holding troubles in turn uping the hotel itself, every bit mentioned before, there are merely five air hoses that serve the Wattay Airport, happening the manner to the hotel from the airdrome itself can be slippery and inconvenient to most of the foreign tourers, non to state researching the metropolis without any aid and counsel from a trusted beginning can be worrying. By holding above job, Syuen is suggested to see an agreement of joint venture with one of the air hoses in order to fulfill client more by supplying a bundle of services to them, starts from the air hoses, allow clients to wing to Laos, and picking up invitees from the airdromes and into the hotel and return, it can be a joint ventures of the hotel itself or develop a whole new set or bundle of services and offer it to the tourers, supplying all transit and circuit guiding services which they able to bask one time the y disembark from their planes and arrive Laos. With the aid from the air hoses spouse, this action able to foster satisfy more visitants, guaranting they have a safer journey within the period they spent in Laos, allowing them to hold a more convenient and comfy journey. On the other manus, by holding this set of services, it able to convert and pull more possible clients, by introduce the services to them, as sing an undeveloped state is ever perceived as insecure and hazardous by most of the aliens, a safe and comfy journey is ever the chief concern in traveling. The scenario of a joint venture understanding between an air hose and a hotel can be seen in the Shanghai International Airport Hotel, as it is a joint venture endeavor by Chinese Eastern Air, which they provides a free bird coach to and from Shanghai Pudong International Airport and the Shanghai International Airport hotel mentioned. While in the hotel anteroom and all the guestrooms, the flight activity will be show through a proctor for every invitee to maintain path of their flight information. And the Shanghai International Airport hotel besides provides air ticket engagement services and multiple location flight check-in services in the anteroom ( Sinohotel, n.d. ) . However, it is still suggested that Syuen Hotel should offer more services in footings of transit, guiding, compared to Shanghai International Airport Hotel, and put clients safety at the first topographic point as the hotel is located in Laos which normally perceived as undeveloped and insecure by the foreigners, to guarantee all the invitees have a pleasant journey, and procuring Syuen s competitory advantages. While the labour cost in Laos is comparatively low as mentioned earlier, Syuen is expected to be able to carry on this program with easiness while basking low cost advantage. Enhance Relationship with Laos Government From antecedently discussed, Syuen Corporation s sawmills concern had been affected due to the quota logging set by the Laos Government. In order to cover with this menace, it is important for Syuen Corporation s to keep a good or positive relationship with the Laos Government senior functionaries such as forces from Kong kouat ka Sapha-nyakone Pa Mai every bit known as Forest Inspection Department ( FID ) in order to hold more quotas on logging the forests and recommend the senior functionaries to strike the illegal logging activities inside the state. However, it is hard for Syuen Corporation s to make so because Laos Government senior functionaries do non ever swear on the logging companies due to the hazard of losing of import administrative places for unsuitably to O.K.ing logging operations as has happened to some senior authorities functionaries in the past. Therefore, Syuen Corporation s can near senior functionaries together with the other sure authorities functionaries, 1 s who can move as surety or give confidence that nil improper will happen in order to derive confident and trust from the Laos Government senior functionaries. Furthermore, Syuen Corporation s can offer profit sharing based on the frequenter client relation to the Laos Government may in term of pecuniary or others to demo the earnestnesss and truenesss of the company toward the Laos Government. Search for logging quota option Besides of normal logging quota, Syuen Corporation s can seek for particular logging quotas that offer by the Laos Government as option. One of the illustrations of the particular logging quotas can be use by the Syuen Corporation s is deadwood logging quotas ( quota mai leep lunar excursion module ) which allow Syuen Corporation s to roll up trees which are already dead such as standing dead tree ( Deadwood ) from wherever country they can be found in wood without limitation ( Baird, 2010 ) . This will let Syuen Corporation s have more forests and stuff to back up the company sawmill s concern besides of normal logging quota. In twelvemonth 2007, a logging quota of deadwood was issued by the Champasak Province in southwesterly Laos to Development of Agriculture and Forestry Industries Company ( DAFI ) for the rosewood and the quota did non stipulate the measure to be cut and the logging site ( Baird, 2010 ) . Decision A few old ages back, Syuen Corporation chief concern is in Malaysia hotel industry, as they continue to turn, their venture into Laos have gained them market portion in 2 different states. Their first mover advantages in Laos are still steadfast, as the state remain a difficult topographic point to travel for new venture. Furthermore, their investing in Laos including the tea plantation and sawmill concern synergized good with their chief concern. However there remain some defects in Laos, such as the authorities wood policy which limit the growing of sawmill concern of Syuen Corporation, and besides low substructure degree, instruction degree and medical service. Therefore, we have come out with 4 recommendations to counter the defect and better the company competitory advantages. We recommended workers to be Send for preparation and implement preparation plans, joint venture with Airline Company, enhance relationship with Laos s authorities, and in conclusion hunt for logging quota alternate. As the option are proven to be practical, as they are either applied by other company or support by diary articles, we hope that the recommendation will be implemented and assist the company.

7 Reasons You Didnt Get the Job

7 Reasons You Didnt Get the Job If you’re  searching for a new job, you want to be  sure you don’t  make any obvious mistakes that might keep you  from finding work- especially after spending a lot of time on job search sites. Although most people know it is a bad idea to cancel at the last moment or wear a running suit to an interview, smaller mistakes can also keep you from being considered. 1. You didn’t  proofread your resumeWith just one glance, a resume can tell a recruiter a lot about a job applicant. A resume that’s messy and contains bad grammar or typos is not likely to be taken seriously. You can fix problems with your resume by using an online grammar checker and rereading it carefully to look for mistakes. If you have a friend who is a whiz  at grammar and punctuation, ask him or her to look it over for you. Whatever it takes, make your resume as perfect as you can.2. Your resume is unfocusedDid you  write your  resume a year ago and are now just recycling it to apply for jobs? The days of using a general resume are over. Because hiring managers are busy people, they want to interview the best candidates for the job and not waste time on applicants whose qualifications aren’t a good fit. Rewriting your resume to include your qualifications that fit perfectly with the job description can get you that interview.3. You didn’t write a cover letterHiring managers go to the cover letter first before looking at an applicant’s resume. Even when applying for a position by sending your resume via email, you really need to include a cover letter. Many hiring managers won’t consider an application without one. Remember to include the reason you want the job in your cover letter, and don’t make it a mini copy of your resume.4. You went into the interview coldLet’s say you’ve been invited for a job interview. You’re feeling pretty confident at this point. But, overconfidence and lack of preparat ion has cost countless people a job offer. Do your homework. Job interviews normally consist of knowing about the company where you are applying, asking questions that are relevant, telling the recruiter why you are qualified and how you can be an asset in the job, and doing a follow up afterward.5. You cast  your net too wideOne mistake some job seekers make is not focusing on the type of job itself. Think about opportunities, not one particular job, and you can find yourself employed faster. Maybe you have your heart set on a job with the Widget Company, but you would have to start at the bottom and work your way up because there are no openings for someone with your qualifications. Focus clearly on the position you want to fill, and expend your efforts in that direction.6. You weren’t on timeTime matters when it comes to hiring managers. Showing up late for an interview reflects badly, as does showing up too early because it can make you appear anxious and make the inter viewer feel pressured. Do leave early to get to your interview about 10 minutes before it is scheduled, but find a spot to relax if you arrive before that.7. You got too personalMaking a personal connection with a hiring manager can be a good idea, such as sharing an interest in a ball team or certain things about the city. However, going overboard and supplying too many details about your personal life takes up the hiring manager’s time and may not reflect well on you. Rambling on, whether in a resume or during an interview, can leave a bad impression. If you do relate personal information, keep it in context with the job. After spending time searching classified job ads and sending in a resume, common mistakes made by a job applicant can cost that person a job. Just as knowing how to be a successful job applicant and sail through an interview is valuable information, knowing how to conduct a job search in a practical way is also. Instead of looking at countless job ads in di fferent locations, TheJobSearch does the work for you by sending you email alerts when jobs fitting your qualifications become available. Fill out your job interests and qualifications, sign up with TheJobNetwork, and that is all it takes.

Group report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Group report - Essay Example Working together on a group project however, one learns that the success of the project is not due to the abilities of one man or one woman and that everyone must work together in tandem in order to ensure the smooth and successful operation of the project. This is new for many of us and we must resist our individualistic urges and sacrifice or self-centered individualism for the betterment of the group. While working on a group project, communitarianism reigns supreme and we must work together in harmony. Seeking to address the ways in which group work can be successful, this brief research paper will explore in holistic fashion the ways in which groups work best together. Accordingly, we turn to our ever important research question which asks, â€Å"Despite all the hype and myths about the nature of groups and teams, is it simply a question of ensuring the right mix of skills and that all the members of the group co-operate with each other. Or is this an over-simplification?† The preceding question will guide our analysis as we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of group dynamics and how groups work best together. Our assessment will aim to answer the research question above and provide a thorough analysis about our experiences with group work. Working together on a group assignment is not always easy and it takes negotiation and a willingness to compromise in order to be successful. As Americans we guard our individualism and sometimes do not work well with others. What we understood very early on is that organizational is key to any group assignment and that while it is important to ensure that the right mix of skills are present within the group it is also imperative that we are organized and plan appropriately in order to ensure that the work progress is smooth, streamlined and on target. We do not know if there is a philosophy of sorts for group projects but we found early on that

STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3250 words

STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS - Essay Example Basically, the acronym SWOT stands for strengths (S), weaknesses (W) which are internal factors while on the other hand the external environmental factors are regarded as either opportunities (O) or threats (T). SWOT analysis is based on the assumption that an effective strategy derives from a good fit between an organisation’s resource capabilities and its external situation (Thompson & Strickland 2001 as cited in Rossouw & Kruger 2003:17). In this case, a good fit will mean that the weaknesses of an organisation and the threats of the environment are minimised while the organisation makes the best of the strengths within it and the opportunities in the environment. The major strength for Etihad Airways is that it has skilled employees who come from diverse cultural backgrounds. It is imperative that the organisation should harness on this strength since it is concerned with expanding its operations to different geographical locations. Employees with a diverse cultural background can positively respond to the needs and interests of those who also hail from different parts of the globe where they also have their own cultural values. The other strength is that Etihad has got an already established market especially in the United Arab Emirates and this gives it a competitive advantage in that it only seeks to strengthen its operations from an already established market. Penetrating new markets will not be that challenging given that this is an established entity in the airline industry. However, noble as the idea of expansion may sound, the main weakness confronting Etihad Airways is that it often does not have enough working capital to meet its requirements. In order to avoid the competitors to gain an advantage, Etihad ought to improve on creating enough capital in order to sustain its initiative to expand its operations. New planes would need to be bought so as to effectively increase route utility which is

Social Service Essay Example for Free

Social Service Essay Man is primarily a member of a social community. He should not only be concerned about himself but also for the welfare and development of society as a whole. It is truly said that â€Å"Jana-Seva† is â€Å"Janardhana-Seva†. The feeling of self-satisfaction that comes when one sees the unshed tears of joy in the eyes of one whose hunger has been appeased, whose thirst has been allayed and whose needs are fulfilled is indeed heavenly. The service rendered by an individual or an institution to improve the social conditions of society is called ‘social service’. This service is rendered on humanitarian considerations and without any motive of profit. Only those people to whom the interests of society are more important than their personal interests come forward to render social service. Social service is based on the ideal of brotherhood of man. It is a natural impulse to help men in distress. It is a noble impulse. It cannot be rendered without an element of self-sacrifice. One has to spend time and energy for it. Nowadays man is concerned only about his own welfare. Obligations, noble thoughts, duties towards society have been pushed to the background as the centre-stage is occupied by a rat-race for materialistic trifles. In a country like India, social service occupies an important place. It is specifically stated in Article 38 of our Constitution that â€Å"the State shall strive to promote the welfare of the people by securing and protecting as effectively as it may, a social order in which justice-social, economic and political-shall include all the institutions of the national life†. In five decades of planning, the social welfare services were aimed at the welfare and the development of children, women and the physically and socially handicapped of the society. Social service is not confined to isolated deeds and words of charity towards the disabled, helpless or the poverty stricken. Doctors can serve by attending to the ailing without being influenced by thoughts of pecuniary gains. Engineers and contractors can serve humanity by doing their jobs efficiently and diligently, without being clouded by greed. Businessmen can do social service if they pursue their work honestly as a vocation. Public servants will be of great service to humanity if the evils of corruption and aimless drift are rooted out and replaced with the seeds of the true spirit of service nurtured by good ethics and strong human values. Politicians can serve by substituting integrity and patriotism for acts of self- preservation. So, for doing social service the only thing which is important is the strong will to do something for the betterment of the society. The social services cover for children includes integrated development of children, care and protection to abandoned, neglected, unwanted, destitute children, setting up creches for working and ailing mothers’ children, nutrition programmes etc. A National Children’s Fund was constituted by the Government during the International Year of the Child in 1979. India has also been associated with United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) since 1949. Programmes are being implemented for the early detection and treatment, education, training and rehabilitation of disabled persons, namely, the blind, the deaf, the orthopedically handicapped, the mentally retarded, spastics and the leprosy cured persons. Social welfare measures at the Government level touch only a fringe of the problem. It is not possible for the Government to reach out to every person who needs help. Therefore, voluntary organisations can and should supplement the Government’s efforts in a big way in this noble task. In view of the illiteracy, ignorance, superstitions and social evils prevalent in our country, the need for social service has assumed a certain urgency. Of course, social service cannot be a whole time activity. It is indeed enough if people with missionary zeal devote 2 or 3 hours a day for social service. Students can take to social service during their summer vacations. Similarly, retired persons can be of great help. Housewives are normally free from their day’s work by 12 P. M. They too can volunteer for social service. There are a number of areas in which social service is called for on a mass scale. First of all, groups of educated people can go out to villages and educate the illiterate. In India about 35% of the people are illiterate. Even our modest efforts can contribute to the removal of illiteracy from our country. Our villages lack sanitation. Social workers can meet the villagers and educate them about the need for sanitation and cleanliness. Nearly 72. 2 per cent of India’s population lives in villages. If our villages look neat and clean, our country will acquire a new look. The death rate is much higher in villages because of the lack of medical facilities. Villagers need to be enlightened and encouraged to protect their children from deadly diseases by having them inoculated. Inoculations give unmunity from diseases like typhoid, whooping cough, diphtheria, leprosy, T. B. , polio etc. When Government officials approach villagers, the villagers distrust their claims. Social workers can create a better psychological effect on villagers and explain to them the advantages of inoculations. India’s population is growing at an alarming rate. It has already crossed the 1,027 million mark and India has become the second- most populous country in the world. Social workers can do great service by putting across to villagers the message of family planning. In cities and towns, slums are coming up due to large scale migration of people from villages to cities. These slums lack sanitation. There are no civic amenities at all. Life in slums is miserable. People living in the slums indulge in distillation of illicit liquor, sale of narcotic drugs and other criminal or antisocial activities. There is a dire need to launch cleanliness drives in these slums. Special programmes should also be undertaken in these areas so that people who have gone astray can be brought back to the right track. In our country, Mother Teresa rendered great social service by serving thousands of poor, needy and destitute people. She set an example of what social service can do for the suffering humanity. Voluntary organisations like the Bharat Sewak Samaj, Sadhu Sewak Samaj, Servants of the People Society, Ramakrishna Mission, Arya Samaj and many other social welfare and voluntary organisations are doing a lot of good work for people in different spheres of life. Let each man uphold the ideal of â€Å"Help ever, hurt never† as his motto and contribute his bit to make the world order politically powerful, socially stable, economically efficient and spiritually strong.

Home School vs. Public School Essay

Schooling is an important decision in educating children. In today’s world more and more families are choosing to home school their children. While there are advantages and disadvantages to both options. The major factors in deciding which option is best are the learning environment, the curriculum, and meeting the needs of the child or children. Advantages: Home School Learning environment. Children within the home school environment are more likely to be calm and comfortable in his or her home. The children will not have the peer pressure of the public school, but the children will have peer pressure from his or her siblings. The children may also show competiveness to one another. A child will feel safer in his or her home surrounding which will give them a better success rate in his or her learning and testing scores (Public School vs. Home School). In a recent study children that are home schooled, test in reading, language, and math are in the 88th percentile, whereas public school children are in the 50th percentile (Home School Domination). Children are more comfortable with his or her family which let the child have less fear and allow them to focus and study more. The beneficial factor of home school is the child or children can create a bond with his or her family, and a closeness that lets the child or children learn at his or her own pa ce, and feel comfortable with his or her learning style, for there is no right or wrong way to learn. Curriculum. There are many types of home school curriculums a parent can choose to teach their child or children. In order to choose the right option the parent addresses the child or children and makes a choice based on his or her needs. Some of the curriculum options are the traditional approach, the unit study approach, the Charlotte Mason approach, and the un-schooling approach (Educational Philosophies Defined). Curriculum can be taught as long as a child needs, when it is best suited to learn for the family and the child or children, and how the child learns best (Public School vs. Home School). Home schooling allows for a shorter day, where learning can be taught in a few hours vs. a few days or weeks. The schedule can be modified to the needs of the child or children, field trips can happen more frequently, visits to museums and art galleries can be offered, and daily activities  outside the home can create hands on learning of the child or children’s environment. Meeting the needs of the child. Home school offers a great advantage of the child or children’s needs being meet on a daily basis. Parents can take the time to sit one to one with the child and allow adequate time to teach them and make sure the child is understanding what is being taught. Some children may not need one to one and excel at a rapid pace and at home the parent can make sure the child has adequate amounts of learning so the child does not get bored. The parent can also offer a wider variety of activities, creativity, and unique ways to teach their child or children (Home Schooling vs. Public Schooling: The Pros and Cons of Home Schooling). Some children may learn to read in certain positions or places where they feel comfortable and safe, some children may learn counting with toy cars vs. counting cubes, and some children may learn science with experiments. These are all things okay to allow a child to do while being taught at home. These are all options to offer the best possible learning, for a child and meeting his or her needs. Advantage: Public School Learning Environment. Public schools offer children the ability to interact and work with others (Advantages of Public Schools). It provides academics and skills to use and apply for interactions with peers (Advantages of Public Schools). Children in a public school setting have more exposure to a variety of teachers and curriculum, such as foreign language, art, home economics, shop, welding, physical education, drama, music etc. (Advantages of Public Schools). The higher number in students gives opportunities to work in groups, do projects, and team sports. The learning environment gives an understanding of diverse backgrounds and the ability to build dynamic skills for the real world (Advantages of Public Schools). Curriculum. Most states are adopting the common core curriculum for the public school system. â€Å"The Common Core State Standards provide clear and consistent learning goals to help prepare students for college, career, and life† (Common Core State Standards). The curriculum of language arts, literacy, and math offered in public schools offer basic classes to advance classes. A general focus on the curriculum is giving the students the ability to learn with a strong foundation in basic skills for life and work success (Wyoming Public Schools). Not only is the public school system  focusing on language arts, literacy, and math they also offer a wider variety of extra-curricular classes that help children learn. This gives the children more experiences of what to expect in higher education. Meeting the needs of the child. Public schools have the No Child Left behind Act. This has allowed the public school system to treat each child as an individual and as a whole child (National Education Association). It requires the teaching staff to address each child’s physical, emotional health, and well-being. It requires assurance that students are actively engaged in varying experiences and settings inside and outside the classroom (National Education Association). â€Å"The public education system is critical to democracy and its purpose, as reflected in this Act, is to maximize the achievement, skills, opportunities, and potential of all students by building upon their strengths and addressing their needs, and to ensure t hat all students are prepared to thrive in a democratic society and diverse, changing world as knowledgeable, creative, and engaged citizens and lifelong learners.† (National Education Association). When a parent is deciding on the education of their child or children there are many factors to take into consideration. While there are many more factors to consider than what you have just read, the decision is ultimately the parents and what fits for their child or children. Home schooling seems to give the more flexible approach and the benefits of that in its self are endless. Public school gives many opportunities that home school may not offer as the child or children get older. In general the facts are what matter most and that is the learning environment, curriculum, and meeting the needs of the child and each one of those are met either in home school or public school. Management Institute Essay

In consulting Linton, there are two main components that would have to be closely analyzed: Deborah Linton’s leadership style and Lisa Benton’s ability to positively impact her new business environment. Lisa Benton is well educated and experienced in her field; yet, she allows dysfunction to distract her of her ability to contribute. Benton surrendered the power of her voice because she humbled to the intimidation perceived from her supervisor, coercive teammate, and questionable environment. LINTON MANAGEMENT PROFILE Deborah Linton is the average person in a leadership role who does not know the difference between management and leadership. Because she does not know the difference, her approach towards Lisa Benton is all wrong for the right reasons. Her initial address to Benton was out of fear versus confidence in her ability to manage a Harvard graduate. Linton’s fear warrants a close investigation of her management style, her conflict resolution, and her measurements of being a leader. Deborah Linton’s management profile has to be priority in order to accurately identify and effectively address in order to improve her effectiveness. If we were to complete a DiSC Assessment of Linton’s management style, Linton would most likely be a D (Dominance) style manager. Linton had a â€Å"sophisticated appearance and confident manner† by which she carried herself in the office. Upon meeting with Lisa Benton for the first time, Linton expresses her discontent with â€Å"MBAs [who] act like they know a lot more than they do† (Weber, 1994). This is reflective of the D style motivation of power and authority. And how blatantly noticeable Linton is  forceful and direct when addressing Benton. Immediately, she sets the tone of her position and authority by challenging Benton’s academic success with great insensitivity. Linton’s dominant management style is consistent throughout the article when she addresses Benton on a couple occasions or even her counterpart, Jack Vernon. The approach with Lisa Benton was misguided from the start which prompts the question, â€Å"Who would want to be led by [Linton]?† This question is significant because Goffee and Jones emphasize the importance of followers to leaders. They state that leaders â€Å"better know what it takes to lead effectively — they must find ways to engage people and rouse their commitment to company goals† (Jones, 2000). Linton does not give Benton any idea of the current state of the company or how she would like for her department to impact the company’s success. She did not share her vision for her department and what she expected to produce in a particular time frame. Benton had no clue as to how her role was to impact the Although Linton greeted Benton pleasantly, she negated the meeting by complaining her arrival was a week too early. Benton’s eagerness to contribute to the company’s success was not celebrated or welcomed. This attitude was perpetuated once Linton pushed-off Benton to another product manager, Ron Scoville. Linton has proven herself to be more of a manager versus a leader. Although Benton was new to the team, Linton places more importance on product management. Priority should have been placed on making sure Benton was properly trained. Linton focused her efforts on â€Å"the detailed steps that are necessary to get results† (Lecture, Wk 2). Benton felt like an intruder whenever she stepped to Linton’s office because she was refused regularly. Linton’s lack of concern towards Benton’s development further demonstrates her dominant management style. Linton not only managed with dominance, but also dealt poorly with resolving conflicts. Thomas and Kilmann would assess that Linton is unassertive and uncooperative when resolving conflict amongst subordinates. Evidenced when Linton resolved conflict between Benton and Scoville by adopting Scoville’s  perspective. She addresses Benton by stating â€Å"I understand you’re too good for copying† implying that Scoville’s assessment was accurate. According to Thomas-Kilmann, Linton sidesteps the issue and postpones dealing with the conflict. Linton expresses her knowledge of Scoville not being liked in the office despite her personal feelings towards him being â€Å"misunderstood† and â€Å"having a heart of gold.† In both instances, Linton never truly addressed or resolved the issues. She avoided the issues and encouraged Benton to do the same in the interest of results. Linton is weak in the area of emotional intelligence. She struggles in the key areas regarding emotional intelligence: Self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skill. Linton is not aware of her own emotional impact on her employees or their emotional challenges. Scoville definitely has emotional challenges made evident through his emotional outbursts with Benton. Benton herself dealt with a great deal of emotional challenges. Linton failed to recognize the emotional challenges and utilizing them to build up her team. Additionally, Linton did not motivate her team members to cooperate or collaborate. She is not able to motivate because she does not empathize with Benton. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR LINTON Using Jack Welch Winning as a mirror to Linton, there are some basic principles that must be established and practiced. First of all, Linton needs to learn her new team. She has a close relationship with Scoville; yet, she needs to consider the chemistry of the team now that Benton is on board. Instead of demeaning Benton and her education, she should set the standard for her performance by giving her a vision, a goal. Linton does not†define where she wants her team to go† (Lecture, Wk 1). Benton never received her objectives or given a set of expectations from which her performance would be measured. Linton does not know what it takes to be a leader. As mentioned previously, Linton is a manager who believes her position qualifies her as a leader. My first recommendation is for Linton to understand the difference between a manager and a leader. Kotter makes an interesting distinction between  management and leadership as being forms of coping. Kotter states that â€Å"management is about coping with complexity. Leadership, by contrast, is about coping with change† (Kotter, 2001). Linton does not cope well with the change of Benton, an MBA graduate of Harvard, joining the team. Linton needs to better understand what is characteristic of a leader. Jack Welch specifically details what leaders do. I would encourage Linton to adopt and immediately apply these rules. Of the eight rules that Welch identifies, several rules need to take precedence. â€Å"Leaders relentlessly upgrade their team.† Linton spent time pushing Benton away versus taking advantage of the time to coach her. Rule #2 states that â€Å"leaders make sure people not only see the vision, they live and breathe it.† Benton did not receive her objectives let alone understand where Linton wanted to take the company. â€Å"Leaders establish trust with candor, transparency, and credit,† as stated in Rule #4. Candor will be addressed later; yet, transparency and credit seemed none existent. Linton rarely met with Benton, let alone, allow herself to become open and transparent. In fact, Benton often felt like she was intruding. Lastly, Linton needs to apply the last couple rules of â€Å"inspiring risk taking† and â€Å"celebrating† her team members. Linton has to celebrate her team members for their contributions and skills they bring. BENTON LACK OF LEADERSHIP Lisa Benton is an experienced and educated potential leader who over-analyzes her own situation. Not that she was not qualified for the position, but the she allowed the circumstances to have a â€Å"muzzling voice† effect over her. Her prowess and proven success were immediately diminished from her first day on the job. Benton was excited about the opportunity resulting from her interview meetings with energetic employees of Houseworld. If she was to take the DiSC Assessment, Benton would definitely fall in the C (Conscientious) management style. Before even accepting the position at Houseworld, Benton based her decision not on her ability, but on which company would provide the training she felt was necessary. Benton did not have a vision to buy into or objectives to guide her efforts. Benton falls prey to her limitations of her management style by â€Å"overanalyzing† her professional situation and isolating herself with  respect to her department. Despite her professional and academic achievements, Benton went from success to failure in accepting the position at Houseworld. Benton aborted her leadership potential by committing a significant sin of leadership. She did not â€Å"give her self-confidence its due.† Jack Welch says that â€Å"self-confidence is the lifeblood of success† (Lecture, Wk 8). Benton also made the mistake of listening to rumors about Linton and Scoville having a personal relationship. This dictated her interaction with them and took away her lateral persuasion. Benton was not able to â€Å"commit to the success† of Linton. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BENTON To sum up in one word a recommendation for Lisa Benton, believe. Benton needs to go back to believing in her own mastered knowledge and proven skills to succeed. Benton needs to identify a focus for her efforts. She attempts to invent work for herself absent of Linton’s objectives; yet, becomes extremely frustrated. Her frustration resides in Scoville’s condescending demands and Linton’s nonexistent leadership. Benton needs to follow the â€Å"10 Keys Transition Challenges.† She needs to â€Å"promote herself† to the ideal and expectations she had of herself coming into this position. Benton successfully â€Å"accelerated her learning, built alliances, and built her network† amongst colleagues outside of her department. Yet, Benton needs to step back and diagnose the situation at Houseworld so she can effectively apply her skills. Additionally, she needs to â€Å"build a good relationship with her boss, focus on strategic alignment, build her team, and secure early wins† for herself. Benton had already built the foundation of lateral leadership which she needed to trust more than fear. Because she feared it she was not able to have the influence with Linton and Scoville that was rightfully due. As suggested in the Art of Persuasion, Benton has to build â€Å"credibility† for herself by confidently performing for the reason she was hired. Then she needs to establish â€Å"shared benefits† and â€Å"memorable evidence† within her department. She has to â€Å"vividly describe a comparable situation† from her  prior professional successes. Lastly, Benton has to â€Å"show emotion† in a more passionate manner towards results and not the explosive fits of frustration. CONCLUSION Although it was not properly implemented, Benton’s performance evaluation was accurate. Linton identified that Benton possessed strengths that she refrained from using. Benton felt this was unjust because she was never really given true direction. Ultimately, Benton is well capable of performing the duties of the position she filled. Benton needed to rise to the occasion, utilize lateral authority and influence, and emphatically believe in herself despite the unfavorable environment. REFERENCES Welch, Jack,Welch, Suzy. THE DEVILS ADVOCATE essays

THE DEVILS ADVOCATE essays I recently saw a movie called, "The Devil's Advocate." The previews for this movie seemed unbelievable and sounded very similar to a previous lawyer-based movie. To my surprised, I came out of the movie with many questions, arguments, and admittedly, a little fear. I really enjoy a movie that provokes conversation and arguments about a particular subject that is controversial or makes a person think how they would react in a particular situation. The movie revolves around a small-town lawyer from Florida who is extremely gifted in his ability to win cases, whether his clients were guilty or not. For example, at the beginning of the movie he was defending a person who was wrongly accused of such a horrible crime. He truly believed that his client was innocent because of his position as a well-respected teacher in the community. During the trial he noticed that his client was really enjoying himself and was aroused by her accusations and testimony. At this point he had to make a moral decision that only he could make. Should he continue to represent his client, even though he strongly believed that he was guilty of this crime? He appeared to have a personal struggle with this question, but in the end he decided to defend his client and actually won the case, ultimately keeping his perfect record, but also cheating the abused child who was unfairly molested by this man. He was then offered a great job in New York for a large law firm and became the new hot shot at the company because of his reputation in winning cases. This is when the movie gets extremely interesting, and also a little scary. He and his wife were so surprised and overwhelmed by this new lfie full of nice things and new friends. This new life was possible because of his willingness to do anything to win a case. As it turned out, the head of the law firm was actually the Devil who recruited him because of his disregard for morals in order to do one thing,...

Even in the turbulent market scenario, it managed to increase its sale of life and pensions by 11 percent. Total life and pensions sale became 36,283 million pounds. Sale of general insurance also increased. (Aviva Plc. 2009; Annual Report of 2008) a) Weighted average cost of capital: Cost of capital to a firm is generally defined as the opportunity costs of investors for making their investment in the firm. When an investor invests his fund in a particular firm, he actually looses other opportunities of investing his funds in other securities having risks equivalent to risks of the security of the firm he is actually investing his fund in. hence, if a firm fails to earn a return on capital at least equal to its weighted average cost of capital (WACC), it actually destroys its value. If a firm manages to earn a return that is greater than its weighted average cost of capital, it becomes successful to create value. On the other hand, if it manages to earn a return exactly equal to its weighted average cost of capital, then it neither loose nor create any value. WACC can be defined as the rate that a firm is expected pay for financing its asset. It is actually the minimum level of return that a company needs to earn on its exist ing asset base for satisfying its creditors, its owners, as well other providers of capital.( (Miles and Ezzell, 1980; â€Å"Weighted average Cost of Capital†) The weight of equity can be defined as the ratio of market capitalization to the market value of the firm and the weight of debt can be defined as the ratio of market value of debt to the market value of the firm.
